George Desmond Kamurasi has been largely unknown to many Ugandans outside Tooro’s royal circles but all that changed dramatically following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, which has put him in the spotlight, here we breakdown all we know about him.

Journalist Andrew Mwenda reported that Tooro’s Royal Succession Committee had selected the 36-year-old George Desmond Kamurasi to succeed the late monarch even though, the reported selection is still awaiting the completion of the kingdom’s formal customary process and public proclamation.

Who is George Desmond Kamurasi?

George Desmond Kamurasi is the son of Prince George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, a son of former Tooro King Sir George David Matthew Kamurasi Rukidi III.

Prince Mugenyi was reportedly a younger brother of King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, the father of the late King Oyo. This would make George Desmond Kamurasi King Oyo’s first cousin.

Prince Jimmy Mugenyi also played an important role in the kingdom’s history, having reportedly been among the guardians appointed to look after King Oyo when he ascended the throne at just three years old.

George Desmond Kamurasi

The Reported Successor With A British Connection

Investigations into George Desmond Kamurasi’s background have uncovered British corporate and football records linked to the same name.

UK Companies House records reportedly identify a George Desmond Kamurasi born in August 1990, matching the reported age of Tooro’s selected successor.

The records also link the name to GKGoalkeeping Limited and Kickup Sports Ltd.

Meanwhile, football records identify a George Kamurasi as a Ugandan goalkeeper who played for several English non-league clubs, including Grays Athletic, Brentwood Town, Potters Bar Town, Tilbury, Greenwich Borough, Ashford United and Hythe Town.

The English Football Association’s records reportedly list a player under the full name “Kamurasi, George Desmond,” strengthening the possible connection.

George Desmond Kamurasi

From English Football To Tooro’s Throne?

If formally confirmed that the footballer and the reported royal successor are the same person, George Desmond Kamurasi’s story would be extraordinary.

The man who reportedly spent years playing and coaching football in England could now be preparing to take over one of Uganda’s most historic traditional thrones.

Tooro Kingdom has not yet publicly issued a primary statement explicitly confirming that the George Desmond Kamurasi selected by the succession committee is the same person found in the British football and corporate records.

Questions Still Surround King Oyo’s Succession

George’s reported selection also comes amid controversy over claims that King Oyo left behind a young son.

Tooro Kingdom officials initially indicated that the late monarch had left behind a prince, while the Babiito royal clan later established a 21-member Royal Succession Committee to handle the customary succession process.

The reported selection of George Desmond Kamurasi has therefore raised fresh questions about how the kingdom will ultimately resolve the succession process.

As Tooro continues mourning King Oyo, all eyes are now on the royal establishment for an official announcement.

If confirmed, George Desmond Kamurasi could be preparing for one of the most remarkable transitions in Uganda’s royal history—from a life reportedly connected to English football to the throne of Tooro.
