Tooro Kingdom Releases Burial Programme For Late King Oyo As Final Farewell Is Set For September 12

The Tooro Kingdom has released the official burial programme for the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, setting September 12, 2026, as the day he will be laid to rest at the historic Karambi Royal Tombs.

King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, and his body was returned to Uganda for nine days of public mourning, allowing thousands of mourners to pay their final respects.

According to the programme announced by organising committee Co-Chairperson Dr. Richard Rwabuhing, the final day will begin with public viewing of the late King’s body at Karuziika Palace.

Mourners will then proceed to St. John’s Cathedral for the main funeral service, which will be led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

After the service, the King’s body will be taken to the Karambi Royal Tombs, where he will be buried in accordance with Tooro Kingdom cultural traditions and royal protocols.

The Kingdom has been coordinating with the Ugandan government on security, logistics and cultural arrangements ahead of the historic farewell.

Organisers have also issued guidelines for the final ceremony, including limits on the number of people who will be allowed to speak during the funeral service and restrictions on vehicle access to the royal tombs.

The measures are intended to maintain order and ensure the final farewell follows established royal and cultural protocols.

King Oyo’s burial will bring to a close a period of mourning for a monarch who spent decades on the Tooro throne and became one of Uganda’s most recognisable traditional leaders.
