Drama has erupted in Mpigi District after authorities discovered empty concrete graves allegedly constructed on land earmarked for the Kisubi–Nakawuka–Nateete–Kasanje–Mpigi road project.
Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama inspected the structures in Membe Village, where they are reportedly part of an alleged scheme to inflate compensation claims by creating the impression that otherwise undeveloped land contains valuable developments.
Investigations indicate that some valuations have allegedly reached as high as Shs2 billion per acre, despite comparable bare land reportedly selling for about Shs35 million per acre.
The alleged inflation has reportedly pushed the projected compensation bill for the road project towards Shs700 billion, raising serious concerns over possible abuse of public funds.
Some Ministry of Works and Transport officials have also reportedly been arrested over suspected involvement in compensation-related irregularities.
During the inspection, Byamukama ordered the removal of the suspicious structures and directed authorities to intensify investigations into valuers, surveyors and land brokers suspected of colluding to inflate compensation claims.
The government says the crackdown is part of broader efforts to combat corruption and fraudulent practices in land acquisition for major infrastructure projects.
