The Church of Uganda has launched an internal investigation after a viral video showed retired clergyman Rev. Canon Richard Ongom and Abim LC II Chairperson Innocent Oyoo involved in a physical confrontation during a church service.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 27, at All Saints Church in Abim Town Council, where Oyoo reportedly sought permission to address the congregation about security matters and an upcoming mosquito net distribution exercise.
According to Oyoo, he had been asked by the District Internal Security Officer and the UPDF commander in Abim to pass on security updates to residents. He said he requested only a few minutes to speak but was stopped by Rev. Ongom, leading to the confrontation.
Rev. Ongom, a retired clergyman serving on contract in the Diocese of North Karamoja, gave a different account, saying the service had already been organised and that anyone wishing to address the congregation was required to seek permission from the church administration in advance.
The Church of Uganda has clarified that its established procedures place the priest presiding over a service in charge of worship and other activities taking place during the service. However, the Church stressed that the procedure does not justify physical violence or confrontation.
Police have also opened an investigation into the incident. According to the Church, both Ongom and Oyoo have recorded statements, complaints have been filed by both parties, and Police Form 3s were issued as investigations continue. No arrests had been made at the time of the latest report.
The Church of Uganda, through Acting Provincial Secretary Balaam Muheebwa, said relevant administrative and pastoral measures would be taken once the circumstances surrounding the confrontation are established.
Christians and members of the public have meanwhile been urged to remain calm and pray as police and Church authorities handle the matter.
The incident has sparked wider discussion online about church protocol, the authority of clergy during worship services and the appropriate way for local leaders to communicate security or public-interest information to congregations.
