The Catholic Church in Uganda is mourning the death of Rev. Fr. Dr. James Kabuye, a celebrated priest and pioneering liturgical composer who has died at the age of 92.
A priest of the Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana, Fr. Kabuye was widely recognised for his contribution to the development of contemporary Catholic liturgical music in Uganda.
His compositions, many of them written in Luganda, became widely sung in Catholic churches across Uganda and beyond, combining traditional African musical elements with Catholic worship.
Born around 1934, Fr. Kabuye was ordained a priest in 1962 and shortly afterwards travelled to Switzerland to study music.
His musical training became particularly significant in 1964 as the Catholic Church prepared for the canonisation of the Uganda Martyrs in Rome on October 18. Fr. Kabuye worked with renowned composer Joseph Kyagambiddwa on the oratorio prepared for the historic occasion.
While studying in Switzerland, he became part of the African choir that performed Ganda music using traditional instruments at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, an experience he later described as historic.
Fr. Kabuye returned to Uganda in 1967 and was posted to Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala. He began adapting Latin hymns into African musical forms while also composing original works suited to local languages and cultural expressions.
His work coincided with reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council, which encouraged greater use of vernacular languages and local cultural expressions in Catholic worship.
For more than five decades, Fr. Kabuye remained an influential figure in Ugandan sacred music. He served on inter-diocesan music committees, trained choirs, organised music festivals and contributed to hymn collections that became widely used across the country.
His musical catalogue is estimated to run into hundreds of compositions, covering Mass settings, entrance hymns, songs of praise, Uganda Martyrs hymns and seasonal pieces.
Among his best-known works is “Abajulizi Ab’Ettendo” (MTO 421), which has become a popular hymn during annual Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
Other widely sung compositions include “Ayi Mukama Ebigambo Byange,” “Ayi Mukama Otenderezebwe,” “Tusimbe Ffena Mukisinde” and “Yogayoga Mbaaga Tuzinde,” a tribute to Saint Mbaaga Tuzinde.
His Christmas songs and other seasonal compositions also remain popular among Catholic congregations.
Fr. Kabuye’s musical style brought together Western harmonic structures and Kiganda musical traditions, producing hymns that were accessible to congregations and encouraged active participation during worship.
He later pursued further studies in the United States and continued composing, teaching and mentoring musicians well into his later years.
In 2022, the Catholic Church and faithful in Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese celebrated his 60th anniversary of priestly ordination.
His death marks the passing of one of the key figures in the history of Ugandan Catholic liturgical music. For generations, worshippers have sung his compositions during Masses, funerals, weddings, Uganda Martyrs celebrations and other major religious gatherings.
